Winery in Plans at the Rise

The Rise, the $1-billion golf resort being built near Vernon, has announced well-known Okanagan winemaker Tilman Hainle will head up the development’s winery. Hainle is originally from Hainle Winery in Peachland, which pioneered Canadian icewine and was the Okanagan’s first certified organic winery.

Hainle Winery maintains the name, but is now owned by the Huber family. Hainle is consulting winemaker.

His consulting duties have also taken him to Zelma Long in Australia and Vilafonte in South Africa.

At a recent ceremony, The Rise’s first six-acre vineyard of riesling and pinot grapes was unveiled.

Another 34 acres of vines will be added and the first grapes will be harvested in 2007 for wine releases in 2008.

In the meantime, Hainle will oversee grape acquisition from other Okanagan vineyards, in order to put out wines under The Rise label as soon as next spring.

Also at the launch, The Wines of Canada author John Schreiner gave a talk on how the Okanagan became a world class wine region. Construction in underway at The Rise on an 18-hole Fred Couples Signature Golf Course and the first homes for spring completion.

It will take eight years and various phases for The Rise to fully build out 1,210 homes, hotels, village centre and tennis and equestrian centres.

At a cost of $1billion and conversing 735 acres, The Rise is the most ambitious resort development underway in the Okanagan.
